About this office
The Vice-President is the second-highest constitutional office in India. The Vice-President is the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and discharges the functions of the President when that office falls vacant.
Term
5 years (Article 67).
How the office is filled
Elected by an Electoral College of the members of both Houses of Parliament, by a single transferable vote (Article 66).
Key powers and functions
- Ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha; presides over the upper house and its proceedings (Articles 64 and 89).
- Acts as President when the office of President is vacant, until a new President is elected - for a maximum of six months (Article 65).
